An army veteran struggles to assimilate back into a country he barely recognizes while trying to win the heart of an Iraqi immigrant teetering on the brink of deportation. To help adjust to coming home from war, Sam takes a stab at stand-up comedy. He also lands a job working for his cousin’s Wall Street firm. Amira is an illegal immigrant living in NYC with her uncle Bassam, who was Sam’s former interpreter during the war. Amira fled Iraq after her brother was killed in a raid by US soldiers. She has a run-in with the police while selling pirated DVDs and bolts from the cops – putting her on the run from the authorities. Bassam is out of town, so Sam promises to look after her. Sam and Amira struggle to combat their feelings for each other, realizing that they’re trapped in a society that marginalizes immigrants and veterans – making them outsiders in a country that was founded by immigrants and protected by veterans.
