Most-attended film from the 2013 Heartland Film Festival/first feature film to be directed and executive produced by deaf talent will screen at Laikin Auditorium, Arthur M. Glick JCC
Heartland Film and the JCC present a special presentation of No Ordinary Hero: The SuperDeafy Movie, a family drama about a deaf actor who plays a superhero on a TV show who must look beyond the cape to inspire a deaf boy to believe in himself. The powerful film, which will release theatrically later this month, had its world premiere at the 2013 Heartland Film Festival last October and was the most-attended film among the festival’s 132 short and feature-length selections. Since 2011, the JCC has been a premiere screening partner of nonprofit arts organization Heartland Film, showcasing quality independent cinema as a part of the Heartland Film Roadshow series.
No Ordinary Hero marks the first time in cinematic history that a SAG commercial feature film was directed and executive produced exclusively by deaf talent. The film is directed by Troy Kotsur, who is deaf, and executive produced by Liz Tannebaum, Paul Maucere and John Maucere, who are all deaf. Since its premiere, the film has been 100 percent open captioned at every one of its screenings.
Based on the internationally known SuperDeafy character, No Ordinary Hero, featuring Academy Award winner Marlee Matlin, is the evolution story in this fictitious family drama. John Maucere stars as Tony Kane who plays a superhero on TV, but in real life he’s just another guy who happens to be deaf. Eight-year-old Jacob Lang, also deaf, is having a hard time. When Tony and Jacob’s paths cross, they inspire belief in each other and in themselves. The film is completely open captioned making it fully accessible to deaf, hard of hearing and “signing impaired” audiences.

The film was produced by award-winning producers Hilari Scarl (“See What I’m Saying”) and Doug Matejka (“Beautiful Losers”) and written by Taly Ravid. The film stars John Maucere and features Marlee Matlin, Ashley Fiolek, Shoshannah Stern, Kim Poirier, Deanne Bray, Ryan Lane, Bernard Bragg, Michael Spady, Michelle Nunes, Zane Hencker, Peter Hulne, James Leo Ryan, Colleen Foy and Barbara Eve Harris.
