In 1940s Germany, young Liesel Meminger is growing up with her adoptive parents after the loss of her brother. While war surrounds them, Liesel finds solace in books after she learns to read from her adoptive father, Hans. Their life becomes more dangerous when Max, a Jewish man on the run from the Nazis, seeks shelter in their home. Hidden in the basement, Max and Liesel form a unique friendship as she continues to grow up in a horrifying and emotional moment in history.
