The Bridge to Terabithia

Jess Aarons is an outsider at school and in his own family. Jess has trained all summer to become the fastest kid in his middle school class but his goal is unexpectedly thwarted by the new girl in school, Leslie Burke, who competes in the “boys only” race and wins.  Despite their awkward introduction, the two outsiders quickly become best friends. Leslie loves to tell stories of fantasy and magic. Jess loves to draw, but until he met Leslie it was something he kept to himself. Leslie opens a new world of imagination for Jess.

Terabithia is a place where both Jess and Leslie are able to escape together using imagination. Why do you think Jess has trouble “seeing” the imaginary creatures and surroundings of Terabithia at first? Why do you believe the ability to imagine come so naturally to Leslie? Do you have a place, real or imaginary, that you escape to on a regular basis?

Jess has to deal with a great tragedy in the film. Have you ever had to deal with a tragedy? How did you handle it and who helped you get through that tough time?
