An ‘Ohana’ – or family – of unrelated men and women paddle a Hawaiian outrigger canoe 1750 miles across the length of the Hawaiian archipelago to honor a sacred promise, or Kuleana given to their leader, Kimokeo, by his deceased uncle. Part obligation, part oath, in traditional Hawaiian culture a Kuleana binds a person to their culture and to their ancestors. This unprecedented voyage across vast expanses of open water mirrors Kimokeo’s personal and spiritual transformation from a troubled youth known as ‘Bully’ to a man worthy of the respect of his people. While the journey is ultimately Kimokeo’s, each member of this ohana dedicates their life to the journey and in the process realizes their own sacred promise has been fulfilled.
