Stuffy, by-the-book schoolmaster Arthur Chipping’s day-to-day life follows a strict and welcomed pattern at the British boys’ school he oversees. He is soon confronted with the changing world of the Roaring Twenties, however, as manifested by the charming dance hall singer Katherine Bridges. As his friendship with Katherine blossoms over the next decade, Chips slowly comes out of his shell and begins to find a new joie de vivre. His new found enthusiasm is cut short, however, by the start of World War II, and as tragedy befalls him, he must learn to maintain his positive outlook in the wake of mounting disaster.
