At age 65, Paul and Sally Taylor decided they wanted to listen to their first symphonies, close their eyes and follow a conversation, weep in time to a schmaltzy movie and talk on the phone. The Taylors, deaf since birth, met as young children at a school for others who, like them, could not hear. They fell in love, married, and developed strong identities in the deaf community where they lived, worked and raised three hearing children. Filmmaker and daughter Irene Taylor Brodsky tells a deeply personal story about her parents’ complex decision to leave their world of silence and undergo dangerous cochlear implant surgery.
