Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption—a timeless testament to the endurance of the human spirit. Jackman plays ex-prisoner Jean Valjean, hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert (Crowe) after he breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s (Hathaway)
young daughter, Cosette, their lives change forever.
Members of the Truly Moving Picture Award jury thought the film’s themes of grace in opposition to legalism, self-sacrifice for higher ideals and heroism were clearly and poignantly portrayed. The jury marked the film’s high artistic excellence in many areas, including strong performances by the cast, creative cinematography and unique/creative direction. Additionally, the jury found the film to be visually stunning; sets and costuming were amazing and historically accurate down to minute details. The art direction was noteworthy, the music well-performed and powerful.
