Justin McLeod, a former schoolteacher, had his face and body disfigured in a horrific car accident. Since then, he has remained inside the walls of a spacious home, hiding from the outside world. He attempts to make a living as an artist, but finds himself largely shunned by the local community who refer to him disparagingly as “hamburger head” behind his back.  Unexpectedly, and adolescent boy, Chuck Norstadt, comes to visit McLeod, looking for a tutor to help him get into a private school outside their small town in Maine.
