Carl Brashear is a young African-American man who joins the Navy in hopes of a better life. Once there, he decides his true calling is as a Navy diver, a dangerous and difficult post, then as now. Should he succeed, Carl will become the first African-American diver the Navy has ever had. Standing in his way, however, are numerous obstacles, including Billy Sunday, an abusive and autocratic instructor who at first will do anything to thwart Carl’s intentions. Before long, though, Carl proves himself to Billy, and the two become allies as Carl continues to fight against the powerful barriers of racism and personal tragedy that hold his ambitions at bay.
