Young Helen Keller is blind, deaf, and mute since infancy because of a severe case of scarlet fever. Her inability to communicate has left her frustrated. Sometimes her inability to share her desires sends her into fits of violence and rage, terrifying to her helpless family. Her parents are left with no other option but to institutionalize her. In one last desperate move, Helen’s parents seek help from the Perkins Institute, which sends them a “half-blind Yankee schoolgirl” named Annie Sullivan to tutor their daughter.
