After his state’s senator dies unexpectedly, Jefferson Smith, the leader of a Boy Ranger scout group, is appointed to take his place. He is chosen as a man who won’t ask questions while corrupt local and federal lawmakers push through pork barrel legislation. Once in Washington, Smith begins to learn of the level of depravity and corruption that surrounds it. Full of idealism and ethics, Smith refuses to go along with the plan, quite nearly to his own demise. His final impassioned filibuster on the Senate floor is a desperate attempt to prove his innocence — and for a return to innocence in government.
