People don’t think dogs can thing! But Spacy and Gary, two reform-school kids with cosmic imaginations, do. They even think dirt can think! Set in the American middle west of the 1950’s, Shimmer recounts the friendship of these two dramatically different teenagers drawn together by adversity. Under the harsh rule of the authorities, meals are eaten in silence, looking at girls is forbidden, and at night, in the dormitory, there’s too much time to sleep and too much time to think. In the hostile environment, the boys invent signals to communicate.
Suddenly, they seem to tune into a universal code! Everything’s signaling, everything means something – smoke from a cigarette, the glimmer of a spider’s web, the lights of the fireflies. But who’s sending this code? God? The boys call this universal language “shimmer.”
