Teenager David Morgan is part of a hard-working, loving African American sharecropper family in 1933 Louisiana. David finds a stray dog and names him Sounder, because he likes to bark and make his own “sound.” The family faces continual struggles and his father, at his wit’s end, steals a ham to put food on the table. He is arrested and taken to jail, while his family struggles to find news of him and pray for his return.
