Eleven year old Alec is a solitary kid who spends a lot of time day-dreaming and fantasizing about faraway places and foreign lands. Maybe it’s because his father, whom he misses a lot, is a ship’s doctor who travels to all sorts of exotic places Alec would like see but only gets as close to as the weird souvenirs his dad sends him. Not very popular with the kids at school, he tends to spend most of his time with Lucy, the girl next door, or his friend, an older professor.
One day a strange man brings an even stranger parcel to Alec’s house. Inside he finds a collection of magnificent cocoons that may just turn into something else. One morning they do just that and Alec’s room is filled with the most wondrous butterflies imaginable. One of them, however, turns out to be more than just a butterfly and he names her Urugu.
She is a lovely fairy with magical powers who can make a sneaker fly all by itself! Soon Urugu completely overtakes Alec’s every waking moment, until the night of his father’s long awaited and much anticipated return, a night when the moon is full and Alec learns about the joys and pain of love.
