The inmates at Shawshank Prison claim they are innocent and banker Andy Dufresne is one of them. After receiving two life sentences for a 1947 double murder, Andy finds himself in this Maine prison totally unprepared for prison life and culture. Lifer Red observes this soft, innocent man. Red also sees something deeper in the quiet Andy and befriends him, helping him survive the brutality of prison life.
