The Soviet satellite Sputnik orbited across the night sky in 1957. Some were frightened – others, like Homer Hickam, were inspired. He knew then that he wanted to make rockets. In spite of his tough coal-mining father’s objections, Homer pursued his dream with the help of three buddies and with the encouragement of his science teacher, Miss Riley.
October Sky played at the 1999 Heartland Film Festival in the Opening Night.
