Carrie Watts is a mother living with her son, Ludie, and daughter in law, Jessie Mae, in a tiny apartment in Houston. The movie opens with mother and son, both unable to sleep on a summer night, reminiscing about earlier times. She is wistful, thinking of the place she grew up and raised her son. Ludie seems to want to just forget that time, but you can tell he loves his Mother and tries to be kind to her.
